Dear Tony Smith MP

I received a letter from you today speaking of the good things that the Liberal government is achieving and some of the challenges ahead.

I am writing to ask that you achieve another good thing that will address a challenge that everyday Australians face. Could you please work towards a fairer copyright for Australians by supporting the introduction of a fair use exception, as recently recommended by the Productivity Commission.

It isn’t right that everyday activities are deemed to infringe copyright. I am also concerned that millions of taxpayer dollars is spent when teachers use freely available materials. I don’t pay to use this material, I don’t see why schools should either.

The fair use clause would not be a radical change to copyright law and has worked quite well for many years in countries like the US.

I believe that copyright should concentrate on what is fair for both consumers and creators. Fair use would rebalance our copyright system to make it flexible and fair.

Yours sincerely, Rohan Edmeades Montrose, Victoria, 3765, Australia
